Rugby: Hawick 9-22 Melrose

.
Melrose are through to the quarter finals of the BT Cup after defeating Hawick 22-9 at Mansfield Park in the third round of the competition.

The result means that there will be no repeat of last season’s Cup run for Hawick, who can now focus on their remaining two Premiership matches.

On a heavy surface at Mansfield Park it was no surprise that the kickers ruled the day and in the event there were seven penalty goals before the first and only try of the match was scored.

Melrose led 12-9 with four penalty goals from Joe Helps to three by Neil Renwick for Hawick before the visitors struck with a driving maul that ended with try for replacement prop Nick Beavon.

Helps kicked the conversion and then after a late surge by Melrose the sharp shooter made it six successes from six shots off the tee with a fifth penalty goal to complete the scoring.

Melrose will now play Currie in a quarter-final tie at Malleny Park next Saturday. The other quarter-finals are: Marr v Glasgow Hawks; Heriot’s v Cartha Queens Park; Ayr v GHK.
